4 October Sports Events to Watch: Highlights and Predictions

October is a great time for exciting sporting events, with many of them taking place in Germany. For those looking to stay on top of their sporting news, we’ve assembled four upcoming events you should definitely have on your radar in this post. So, what are we in for this October?

For those that like a splash – World Aquatic Swimming World Cup

October is a busy month for water sports, with three meets of the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup taking place in three different countries, Germany, Greece, and Hungary. The first meet takes place in Germany 6-8th of October, then the Greece meet will happen 13-15th and finally, the Hungary meet on 20-22nd.

Some of the best swimmers have already arrived to Berlin, and tensions are high as they’re participating in one of the biggest meets before the next year’s Olympics. For those into swimming, there are some events and swimmers to watch out for:

  • Men’s 100m Breaststroke will see the giant Qin Haiyang of China put on a great performance, going up against champions like Nicolo Martinenghi, Italy and Nic Fink from USA.
  • Women’s 100m Freestyle – Australia’s Cate and Bronte Campbell are putting on a good show as they’re getting ready to qualify for the Olympics.
  • Women’s 100m Butterfly – Sarah Sjostrom, Sweden, is a strong contender for this discipline – she’s won some great titles in July, so watch this race.
  • Ruta Meilutyte, Lithuania, is another swimmer to watch out for. With some great races under her belt, can we expect another world record from her?

Getting the motors going – DTM

21-22nd of October will bring the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, a sports car race. The race will be taking place at Hockenheimrig, which has hosted the most DTM races since 1984. It’s one of the final big races in this year, so this is definitely an event not to be missed.

As of the moment, we’ve got some great racers high up in the league. Here are a few names to watch out for:

  • Thomas Preining, representing Austria, has debuted just last year, and is already making great progress.
  • Mirko Bortolotti, Italy, is also set to deliver an exceptional performance.
  • Swiss Ricardo Feller is up top in the rankings right now – will he climb higher?
  • Germany’s René Rast has seen some great successes in the Red Bull Ring recently – will he keep it up and climb on the podium in this race?

Another motoring gig – World Rally Championship

If you’re intro rallying, then October is a great month for you. The Central European Rally is coming to Germany, Czech Republic, and Austria, so there’s plenty of action to be seen there. The Rally will start 25th October and will end on the 29th. This is a brand-new event, so fans of motorsport should definitely check it out.

As of right now in the championship standings, Toyota’s team is in the lead with Kalle Rovanperä and Elfyn Evans as the top two drivers. Hyundai and Ford with Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak are following close by. With Tänak having won the Chile rally earlier, tensions are high.

For quick paced action – World Table Tennis Series

For table tennis lovers, Frankfurt will host the World Table Tennis Series Championships on the 29th of October until 5th November. It is the first time the series will take place in Germany. The next stage for the world of table tennis will be the Finals in December, which will take place in Japan.

Some exciting news in this space:

  • Timo Boll has been named with wildcard for the championship for the Men’s Singles, so watch for this pro delivering some great hits;
  • Fan Zhendong and Wang Chuqin, currently the two top ranked players may show in the championships;
  • As for the women, look out for Sun Yingsha and Chen Meng, the current top players in their category.
